Ingredients

For the Onion Rings:
  • 1 large sweet onion
  • 3 cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup panko or regular breadcrumbs
  • ½ cup yellow cornmeal
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning
  • ½ cup egg whites
  • to taste oil spray for coating

Equipment

  • Air fryer
  • Mixing bowls
  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Cooking Spray

Method

Instructions:
  1. Step 1: Prepare the Onion. Start by peeling the onion and slicing it into ½-inch thick rings. Carefully separate the rings and set them aside.
  2. Step 2: Soak in Buttermilk. In a mixing bowl, pour the buttermilk over the onion rings, making sure they are fully submerged. Allow them to soak for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Step 3: Prepare the Breading Station. In a separate bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs, yellow cornmeal, all-purpose flour, and Cajun seasoning. Mix well.
  4. Step 4: Egg Whites Ready. In another bowl, whisk the egg whites until slightly frothy.
  5. Step 5: Breading the Onion Rings. Remove the onion rings from the buttermilk, dip into the egg whites, then coat them in the breadcrumb mixture.
  6. Step 6: Preheat the Air Fryer. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes.
  7. Step 7: Air Fry the Onion Rings. Spray the air fryer basket lightly with cooking spray. Place the breaded onion rings in a single layer and spray the tops lightly with oil spray.
  8. Step 8: Cook to Perfection. Air fry the onion rings for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they are golden brown and crispy.
  9. Step 9: Serve and Enjoy. Remove the onion rings from the air fryer and let them cool slightly. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Use whole wheat flour for added nutrients.
  • Substitute Cajun seasoning with dried herbs for a milder flavor.
  • Freeze uncooked onion rings for future use.
