Ingredients

  • 20 medium shrimp peeled and deveined
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil divided
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Squeeze of lime optional

Equipment

  • Skillet or frying pan
  • Spatula
  • Measuring spoons
  • Knife and cutting board

Method

  1. Start by gathering all your ingredients. Make sure your shrimp are peeled and deveined, and mince the garlic finely. This preparation will streamline your cooking process.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Allow it to heat for about a minute, ensuring it shimmers but does not smoke.
  3. Once the oil is hot, add the minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for about 30 seconds, or until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic, as burnt garlic can become bitter.
  4. In a bowl, combine the shrimp with the ground cumin, chili powder, onion powder (if using), and kosher salt. Toss the shrimp until they are evenly coated in the spices.
  5. Add the seasoned shrimp to the skillet in a single layer. Cook for about 2-3 minutes on one side until they turn pink and opaque. Flip the shrimp and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until fully cooked through.
  6. Once the shrimp are cooked, remove the skillet from heat. If desired, squeeze fresh lime juice over the shrimp for an extra burst of flavor.
  7. Serve the All-Purpose Spicy Shrimp Skillet immediately, perhaps alongside some rice, quinoa, or a fresh salad. Enjoy the delightful combination of spices and perfectly cooked shrimp.

Notes

  • Leftover shrimp can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat gently on the stovetop to avoid overcooking the shrimp.
  • Experiment with different spices to customize the flavor to your liking.
