Ingredients

For the Cake:
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 package (15.25 oz) Devil's Food cake mix
  • 2 cans (21 oz each) cherry pie filling
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 5 tablespoons butter melted
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 ½ cups whipping cream cold
  • 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 chocolate bar for shaving optional

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Baking sheet (18x13 inches)
  • Spatula
  • Electric mixer
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Knife or vegetable peeler

Method

Instructions:
  1. Step 1: Preheat Your Oven. Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures that your cake bakes evenly.
  2. Step 2: Prepare the Cake Batter. In a large mixing bowl, combine the Devil's Food cake mix, 2 eggs, milk, melted butter, and almond extract. Using a whisk, mix until smooth and well combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are perfectly fine.
  3. Step 3: Bake the Cake. Pour the cake batter into your prepared baking sheet and spread it evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Once baked, allow the cake to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
  4. Step 4: Add Cherry Filling. Once the cake has cooled, carefully spread the cherry pie filling over the top of the cake. Make sure to distribute it evenly for a delicious bite in every piece.
  5. Step 5: Make the Whipped Cream. In a large mixing bowl, add the cold whipping cream and powdered sugar. Using an electric mixer, whip the cream until stiff peaks form. This should take about 2-3 minutes. Be cautious not to overwhip, as it can turn grainy.
  6. Step 6: Top with Whipped Cream. Spread the whipped cream layer over the cherry topping evenly, creating a smooth and inviting surface.
  7. Step 7: Add Chocolate Shavings (Optional). If you want to take your cake to the next level, shave some chocolate using a knife or vegetable peeler and sprinkle it generously over the whipped cream.
  8. Step 8: Chill Before Serving. For the best flavor and texture, chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour. This allows the flavors to meld beautifully.

Notes

  • Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
  • If freezing, wrap individual pieces tightly in plastic wrap and then foil to prevent freezer burn.
  • Add whipped cream just before serving for best texture.
