Ingredients

  • 1 large yellow onion sliced into rings
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour for dredging
  • 1 large egg binds the ingredients together
  • 1/2 cup Panko breadcrumbs for crispy airy texture
  • 4 tablespoons buttermilk melted, adds moisture and tanginess
  • 1/3 cup hot sauce your buffalo flavor base
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil for frying

Equipment

  • Sharp knife
  • Mixing bowls
  • Deep frying pan or skillet
  • Tongs or slotted spoon
  • Paper towels
  • Wire rack
  • Thermometer

Method

Prepare the Onion Rings
  1. Peel the large yellow onion and slice into about ½-inch thick rings. Separate the rings, discarding smaller inner pieces or saving for another use. Pat the rings dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
Make the Buffalo Buttermilk Batter
  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together egg, melted buttermilk, and hot sauce until well combined. In another bowl, place the all-purpose flour. In a third bowl, mix Panko breadcrumbs with a pinch of salt and pepper.
Coat the Onion Rings
  1. Dredge each onion ring in flour, shaking off excess. Dip into buffalo buttermilk mixture, letting excess drip off. Press the ring into the panko breadcrumbs, coating evenly on all sides.
Heat the Oil
  1. Pour vegetable oil into a deep frying pan to about 1½ inches depth. Heat oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to ensure correct temperature.
Fry the Onion Rings
  1. Place a few coated onion rings into hot oil, not overcrowding the pan. Fry about 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy. Use tongs or slotted spoon to flip and remove rings. Drain on wire rack or paper towels.
Serve and Enjoy
  1. Serve Buffalo Onion Rings hot with your favorite dipping sauce such as ranch or blue cheese dressing. Enjoy as an appetizer or side dish.

Notes

  • For a milder heat, reduce the hot sauce or mix it with honey for a sweet-spicy flavor.
  • Swap Panko breadcrumbs for crushed cornflakes or gluten-free breadcrumbs for dietary needs.
  • Add garlic powder, smoked paprika, or cayenne pepper into the flour or breadcrumbs for extra flavor.
  • For a lighter option, bake coated rings at 425°F (220°C) for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge up to 2 days; reheat in oven at 375°F (190°C) for 8-10 minutes to maintain crispiness.
