Ingredients

For the Onion Rings:
  • 1 large yellow onion peeled and sliced into thick rings
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • 4 tablespoons butter melted
  • 1 cup hot sauce
  • 1.5 cups vegetable oil for frying

Equipment

  • Large frying pan or deep fryer
  • Cutting Board and Knife
  • Bowl for egg mixture
  • Bowl for flour and breadcrumbs
  • Slotted spoon or tongs
  • Paper towels

Method

Instructions:
  1. Start by peeling the large yellow onion. Slice it into thick rings, about half an inch wide. Aim for uniformity to ensure even cooking. Once sliced, carefully separate the rings and set them aside.
  2. In one bowl, place the all-purpose flour. In another bowl, whisk the large egg along with 2 tablespoons of the melted butter. In a third bowl, combine the Panko breadcrumbs with the remaining melted butter.
  3. Take an onion ring and dip it into the flour, coating it thoroughly. Shake off any excess flour, then dip it into the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off. Finally, coat it in the Panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to ensure an even coating. Repeat this process for all onion rings.
  4. In a large frying pan or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches about 350°F (175°C). You can test if the oil is ready by dropping in a small piece of bread; if it sizzles and browns quickly, you’re good to go!
  5. Carefully place a few onion rings in the hot oil, being sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon or tongs to remove them, and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil.
  6. In a large bowl, combine the fried onion rings with the hot sauce. Toss gently until all rings are evenly coated. You can adjust the amount of hot sauce based on your heat preference!
  7. Serve your Buffalo Onion Rings while they’re hot and crispy. Pair them with your favorite dipping sauces and enjoy the explosion of flavors!

Notes

  • For added flavor, consider seasoning your flour with garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika.
  • Feel free to experiment with different types of hot sauce to find your perfect flavor combination!
  • If you want a milder version, you can mix the hot sauce with some ranch dressing before tossing the rings.
