Ingredients

  • 1 cup uncooked forbidden black rice rinsed
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil

Equipment

  • Medium-sized saucepan
  • Measuring cups
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Wooden spoon
  • Serving bowl

Method

  1. Begin by rinsing 1 cup of uncooked forbidden black rice in a fine mesh strainer under cold water. This step removes excess starch and helps achieve a fluffy texture.
  2. In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the rinsed rice, 1 cup of water, and 1 teaspoon of extra-virgin olive oil. The olive oil not only adds flavor but also helps prevent the rice from sticking together.
  3. Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t boil over.
  4. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and let it simmer for about 30-35 minutes. The rice should absorb the water and become tender.
  5. After the cooking time, remove the saucepan from heat and let it sit covered for an additional 5-10 minutes. Finally, fluff the rice with a fork and serve it warm.

Notes

  • Always rinse the rice to remove excess starch for a fluffy texture.
  • Stick to the 1:1 rice to water ratio for optimal cooking.
  • Let the rice sit after cooking to finish steaming and avoid mushiness.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
