Begin by rinsing 1 cup of uncooked forbidden black rice in a fine mesh strainer under cold water. This step removes excess starch and helps achieve a fluffy texture.
In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the rinsed rice, 1 cup of water, and 1 teaspoon of extra-virgin olive oil. The olive oil not only adds flavor but also helps prevent the rice from sticking together.
Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t boil over.
Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and let it simmer for about 30-35 minutes. The rice should absorb the water and become tender.
After the cooking time, remove the saucepan from heat and let it sit covered for an additional 5-10 minutes. Finally, fluff the rice with a fork and serve it warm.
