Ingredients

For the Fruit:
  • 1 apple diced in bite-sized pieces
  • 1 pear diced in bite-sized pieces
  • 1-2 kiwis peeled and diced in bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup banana sliced in bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup mandarin orange segments
  • 1 cup strawberries left whole if small or cut if large
  • 1 cup seedless grapes
  • 1/3 cup pomegranate seeds
  • Other fruit options mango, papaya, pineapple, blueberries
For the Dressing:
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons honey or sugar (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon chaat masala (homemade recommended for best flavor)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin (briefly roasted in dry skillet over medium heat until fragrant)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Kashmiri chili powder (optional for heat; can substitute cayenne)
  • kala namak (black Himalayan salt; can substitute sea salt or kosher salt)
  • Chopped mint leaves (for garnish; optional)

Equipment

  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Measuring spoons
  • Serving spoon
  • Small bowl

Method

Preparation Steps:
  1. Start by washing all your fruits thoroughly. Dice the apple and pear into bite-sized pieces. Peel and dice the kiwis, slice the bananas, and prepare the mandarin oranges. For strawberries, leave them whole if they are small, or cut them in half if they are larger. Finally, rinse the grapes and pomegranate seeds.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, gently combine all the prepared fruits. Toss them together carefully to avoid bruising the delicate fruits like strawberries and grapes.
  3. In a small bowl, mix together the freshly squeezed lemon juice, honey or sugar (if using), chaat masala, roasted ground cumin, Kashmiri chili powder (if desired), and kala namak. Whisk the ingredients together until well combined.
  4. Pour the dressing over the combined fruits and gently toss everything together. Ensure that all the fruit pieces are coated in the tangy dressing to maximize flavor.
  5. Transfer the Fruit Chaat to a serving dish and garnish with chopped mint leaves if you like. Serve immediately for the freshest taste, or chill it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes before serving for an even more refreshing experience.

Notes

  • Choose firm and fresh fruits to avoid a mushy texture.
  • Experiment with different fruits based on availability or preference.
  • Make the dressing separately and mix it with fruits just before serving for best flavor.
