  • 1 spray oil For frying the fish.
  • 1 egg Helps the breadcrumbs stick.
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise For the sauce.
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard Adds a tangy flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon pickle juice A secret ingredient for zing!
  • 1 tablespoon flour To help with the coating.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt For seasoning.
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper A hint of spice.
  • 1 cup mayonnaise Base for the tartar sauce.
  • 2 tablespoons dill pickle Very finely chopped for texture.
  • 1 teaspoon fresh parsley Chopped for freshness.
  • 1 teaspoon capers Drained and finely chopped for an umami kick.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Brightens the tartar sauce.
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar Balances the flavors.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt Or to taste for seasoning.

Equipment

  • Large frying pan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Serving platter

Method

Instructions:
  1. Start by rinsing the white fish fillets and patting them dry with paper towels. This will help the coating adhere better. Cut the fish into sandwich-sized portions.
  2. In one bowl, combine the flour, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, beat the egg. In a third bowl, place the panko breadcrumbs. This will be your breading assembly line.
  3. Dip each piece of fish first in the flour mixture, then in the egg, and finally coat it generously with the panko breadcrumbs. Make sure each piece is well-coated for that satisfying crunch!
  4. Heat your large frying pan over medium-high heat and spray with oil. Once hot, add the breaded fish pieces carefully. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove from the pan and let them drain on paper towels.
  5. In a mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, dill pickle, parsley, capers, lemon juice, sugar, and salt. Stir until well mixed. This sauce is going to take your sandwich to the next level!
  6. Toast the hamburger or brioche buns lightly in the same pan or in a toaster. Spread a generous amount of tartar sauce on the bottom half of each bun. Place a piece of fried fish on top, add a slice of cheddar cheese, and finish with the top bun.
  7. Serve your McDonalds Fish Sandwich Copycat with your favorite sides such as fries or a fresh salad. Take a bite and enjoy the crispy, creamy flavors that remind you of your favorite fast-food treat!

Notes

  • For a low-carb option, use almond flour instead of panko breadcrumbs.
  • Leftover fish can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat fish in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes for crispiness.
