Ingredients

For the Cajun Shrimp:
  • 1 pound medium-sized shrimp Fresh or frozen, deveined and peeled
  • 1/2 cup margarine or butter Use unsalted butter for a cleaner flavor
  • 4 teaspoons cayenne pepper Adjust based on your spice preference
  • 3 teaspoons salt Sea salt or kosher salt works best
  • 2 teaspoons black pepper Freshly cracked is ideal
  • 2 teaspoons paprika Smoked paprika adds an extra depth of flavor
  • 2 teaspoons cumin For a warm, earthy note
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons dry mustard Adds a tangy kick
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme For an herby touch
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano Complements the other spices
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder Enhances the overall flavor profile
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder Because garlic makes everything better!

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Spatula
  • Measuring spoons
  • Serving platter

Method

Cooking Instructions:
  1. Start by rinsing the shrimp under cold water if they are frozen. Pat them dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This helps the shrimp to sear nicely in the skillet.
  2. In a large skillet, melt the margarine or butter over medium heat. Allow it to melt completely, but do not let it brown.
  3. In a small bowl, combine cayenne pepper, salt, black pepper, paprika, cumin, dry mustard, dried thyme, dried oregano, onion powder, and garlic powder. Stir well to create a spice blend.
  4. Once the butter has melted, add the spice mix directly to the skillet. Stir to combine, then add the shrimp. Toss the shrimp in the spicy butter mixture until they are fully coated.
  5. Cook the shrimp for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are pink and opaque. Be careful not to overcook them, as shrimp can become rubbery.
  6. Once cooked, transfer the shrimp to a serving platter. You can garnish with fresh herbs like parsley or serve with lemon wedges for an extra zing. Enjoy your Cajun shrimp with rice, pasta, or a fresh salad.
