Build Turkey Burger Step by Step
- In a mixing bowl, combine the 1 pound of lean ground turkey, 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, 2 tablespoons of ketchup, 1 teaspoon of seasoned salt, and 1 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper. Mix gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can lead to tough burgers.
- Divide the turkey mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a patty about ¾ inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb; this helps them cook evenly and prevents them from puffing up during grilling.
- Heat your grill or frying pan over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of canola oil to prevent sticking. Allow the oil to heat up for about a minute.
- Carefully place the patties on the grill or in the pan. Cook for about 5-6 minutes on one side until browned. Flip the burgers and cook for an additional 5-6 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
- During the last couple of minutes of cooking, place the hamburger buns cut-side down on the grill or in the pan to toast lightly. This adds a delightful crunch and helps hold up the toppings.
- Once the burgers are cooked and the buns are toasted, it’s time to assemble! Start with the bottom bun, add a lettuce leaf, followed by the turkey patty, sliced tomatoes, onions, pickles, and finish with your favorite condiments like ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise. Top it off with the other half of the bun.
Notes
- Don’t forget to season the turkey mixture well; turkey can be bland if not properly flavored.
- Rest the burgers for a few minutes after cooking to allow the juices to redistribute for maximum juiciness.
- Experiment with different herbs and spices, such as garlic powder or paprika, to elevate the flavor.
- For added moisture, consider mixing in some finely chopped vegetables like bell peppers or mushrooms into the turkey mixture.
