Ingredients

For the Syrup:
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter
For the Waffles:
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 cup full-fat milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Equipment

  • Waffle Iron
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spatula

Method

Instructions:
  1. Start by making the syrup as it can be kept warm while you cook the waffles. In a small saucepan, combine the dark brown sugar, milk, water, and salted butter. Cook over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is smooth. Bring it to a gentle simmer for a few minutes, then remove from heat and set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, combine the eggs, full-fat milk, and water. Whisk until well combined. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay.
  3. Heat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once preheated, lightly grease it with some butter or cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  4. Pour the appropriate amount of batter into the waffle iron (usually about 1 cup, but this can vary by model). Close the lid and cook until the waffles are golden brown and crispy. This typically takes about 4-5 minutes, depending on your waffle iron.
  5. Once the waffles are done, carefully remove them from the waffle iron and place them on a plate. Drizzle the warm brown sugar butter syrup generously over the top. For an extra touch, you can add fresh fruit, whipped cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar.

Notes

  • Always preheat your waffle iron for best results.
  • For lighter waffles, do not overmix the batter; a few lumps are fine.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days, and reheat in a toaster.
